My Students
My students are a tapestry of Brooklyn's finest and kindest. Our school aims to help its students discover their passions and develop their individual strengths. With our four-year homeroom advisory program called Crew, students grow to understand how important being part of a learning community is to academic success and personal development. And because of our small size, I get multiple chances to know nearly every student by name, and with time, by fashion choice, sound of their laughter, and more.
While our school has many amazing programs, a large majority of the students we serve still struggle to take full advantage of these opportunities because of financial burdens, unstable home conditions, and lengthy commute times to our building.
For these reasons, we try to ensure we can bring a multitude of fulfilling experiences to the building and reduce the costs of those outside ones where possible.
My Project
Our school has long centered social justice issues in its curriculum, but that work is never finished. If we seek to ensure our curriculum provides both mirrors reflective of our student body and windows that opportunities to learn from others' experiences, we need more materials to expand the diversity of stories we seek to uplift. As a World Language teacher offering Spanish and Mandarin this year, I have highlighted many intersections between Latin American and Chinese cultures as well as the people and places that are part of a lesser-known shared history. Finding quality retellings for free on YouTube can only go so far, however. So, having a library of acclaimed, in-depth documentaries on these communities, with Spanish language audio tracks included in many of them, would be a fantastic addition to my classroom, to be shared with other teachers as well for inter-curricular tie-ins.
