Seeing is Understanding: Classroom Document Camera

My students need a document camera in our classroom to support their learning of Language Arts and Social Studies topics.

My Students

The 6th and 7th grade students in my Language Arts and Social Studies classes attend a large urban middle school in California. Without a way to show pages of text in a large format, teaching my students strategies to become better readers (like how to annotate and analyze a text) is challenging. The classes are made up of students from diverse cultural backgrounds, including students who are in the process of learning English and students with special needs. All students have different learning styles, and they are working on becoming more aware of how they learn best in my class. The students come in the door ready to learn with smiles on their faces, which inspires me to teach them every day!

My Project

Our classroom needs a document camera in order for the students to see pages of text in a large format on the screen. By projecting pages of books, the students can engage in guided reading and learn strategies to help them improve their reading. Giving students directions for an activity with a document camera can give visual learners and students with learning differences the chance to fully understand the task at hand. The students can also give presentations of their work to the class by placing their work under the document camera. This will give the students valuable experience presenting to a group and it will give them the opportunity to learn something new from their peers and practice their English Speaking and Listening skills.

Donors will be giving current and future students in my class not just a piece of technology, but the opportunity to learn new strategies for reading and for understanding instructions.

These skills will serve them for the rest of their school career and for the rest of their lives.
