My Students

Seeing is believing! Remember when you saw something that caused the light bulb to go off in your head? Many students are visual learners who can learn best when seeing creative lessons or observing other student's work. A document camera will turn that light bulb on!

My students are English Language Learners, ELL, who work very hard to learn a new vocabulary, a new language, a new culture and to communicate with others in English.

Beyond this, are also learning math at the same time. Courses include, Algebra I, II, Geometry and Topics in Math with Geometry and Trigonometry. There are over 80 different languages spoken at our school. Our very diverse, low income population is working very hard to pass the MCAS, the state mandated test, as well as obtaining high scores on the SAT and ACT to attend college. These dedicated students use many learning strategies to master English and Math concurrently, including visual learning and prior knowledge. The teachers in our urban school go beyond the call of duty to teach all our students, but we are limited by technology and a lack of funding to purchase items such as document cameras.

My Project

A document camera will have a huge impact in my classroom. My students will have access to creative lessons and visuals of layered documents showing order and steps. For example, I can put a transparency of a map onto a XY coordinate plane to teach the students distance while marking up the document. Likewise, they will be able to observe student work of their peers. I can share exemplars of excellent student work that will allow the students to see and visualize expectations and correct work. Other teachers have had significant results with the use of a document camera in their classroom and I believe it will be an asset in my classroom as well. The document camera will stay in my classroom to be used with future students for many years to come.

I just love it when the students get that light bulb moment, when everything comes into focus .

. . they really get it. The document camera is an indispensable tool to make those precious moments happen. It creates a whole new level of demonstration, sharing and enabling creative moments. I have so many creative lessons, but am currently limited by the lack of technology in our school. Won't you help make a difference in the learning for my English Language Learners?
