My Project
OECS in Hillside, NJ is an elementary school with grades 2-6. We currently serve 399 scholars. We have multiple inclusion classes, and self-contained classrooms. I am the school nurse for these wonderful students. As a school nurse, I do yearly screenings for height, weight, blood pressure, vision, hearing, and scoliosis. These screenings are crucial to getting students further medical treatment if needed. Our school currently has a Snellen chart for vision screenings (the chart where there are letters that decrease in size as you read to the bottom). While the Snellen chart works for some students, it is not inclusive to all. Students who are non-verbal, dyslexic, speak another language or cannot identify letters are unable to accurately be screened for their vision. This can lead to these students not getting glasses which can impede their learning in school. A Welch Allyn Spot Vision Screener would help to accurately screen all students. This device allows the user to identify vision deficiencies by holding it up to the student’s eye and taking a snapshot. There is no letter or shape identification necessary. As a school nurse, my goal and priority are to give the best care possible to my students, this device would help me do so.
