This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach in an amazing school on the lower east side of Manhattan. One hundred percent (100%) of my students receive free lunch, and most have never set foot outside of New York City, much less New York State. My challenge is to open their eyes to the world around them and to show them all the diversity there is. I am fortunate enough to have received a grant to purchase some amazing science videos. Unfortunately, however, our school has limited access to a television and VCR.
Most of my students have difficulty in reading and do not have the background information to create the mental pictures needed to understand other environments, animals, plants, and cultures. By showing them a video, I can increase their interest, as well as their understanding and (even more importantly) their desire to seek out opportunities in their life to see the world around them.
I am asking for a television and VCR for our science room to transport my students on video field trips and open their eyes to places they could never imagine.
