Reading science data tells us that the best way for emerging readers to incorporate newly acquired phonological knowledge is to practice with books that reinforce that knowledge, i.e., the letter patterns that they are working on. My students are dipping their toes into the waters of reading and they are so excited to have these books, real books that they can hold, and decipher the information in them to read their first stories on their own (or with a little guidance...). They will be in this phase for about a half a school year, I hope, and while they are finding their way, the books you gifted us will enable them develop the skills they need to read non-controlled text and then the world of reading is open to them. Even harder if the student is struggling with reading skills. \r\n\r\nThese books have been a godsend for my practice. Engaging students in reading from text is what my job is all about and these decodable books give some students their first taste of \"dropping into\" a story through reading, using their imagination in a way that screens don't ever approach. \r\n\r\nThank you for enriching these students' lives. Having the black lights has immediately been a hit, and a great way to get my reluctant decoders to puzzle over challenging words and push their skills. We are working on blends before and after vowels and for these dyslexic readers, the blends are very challenging. But each time they push themselves, the synapses in their brains seek out more-direct pathways and with repetition, these pathways become a super-highway. It's also effective for kids with working memory, this repetition, and now, every Friday, we can get hyper-focused on pushing our decoding skills. \r\n\r\nThe green screen has turned out to be more complex that I thought, and I'm partnering with our art teacher to put it in action. My plan is to have them create an outfit for super silent e, when we get to those patterns, each one will be a different vowel -consonant-e, flying over the city in different poses. Should be cool. \r\n\r\nAgain, so grateful to all you gave our students.","fullyFundedDate":1734570733025,"projectUrl":"project/novelty-in-the-reading-room-super-char/8980969/","projectTitle":"Novelty in the Reading Room: Super-Charge Engagement!
