Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Most of my students come from families that battle with the struggles of poverty, trauma, living in the shelter system or projects. My students are predominantly Hispanic or black. In addition to their personal struggles outside of school, each of my students has a learning disability and has had many failures in their short educational careers before entering my classroom.
In a diverse community, resources are often limited and teachers must dip in their own pockets to ensure students receive the high-quality education they are entitled to.
The vast majority of students in the school qualify for free and reduced lunch.
Having colorful visuals helps boost student engagement and future use of materials too!
My Project
Being a special education teacher I spent hours creating visuals to help students complete daily living skills, stay organized and on task and/or manage their behavior. Visuals work better when they are engaging and vibrant. It makes students want to use the tools to make improvements. Recently, my colored printer died and there is not another one in the building to use! This has been a huge challenge and left me spending hours to find ways to print or create by hand tools that are vital to the everyday success of my students. We need to see in color to add to our vocabulary word wall or even remember to close the wipes so they don't dry out. I find that my students simply ignore the visual reminders when they are in black and white. This project will bring a colored printer back to our classroom as a means of further engagement.
