My Students
I currently teach at an urban public school where all the students receive free lunch. It is also an ESL (English as Second Language) cluster site. I provide ESL instruction to students in our neighborhood and also to those who are bussed in from other neighborhoods whose local schools do not offer ESL instruction. My K-8 ESL students come from 11 different countries: Haiti, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, Mali, Ecuador, Egypt, China, and Cambodia. Most of them are at ESL Levels 1 and 2, namely, at the beginner stages.
When they first came to our school , most spoke no English.
With consistent daily ESL instruction in just a little over a few months, many have made tremendous progress in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Many parents have shared with me that they are so impressed by the remarkable and speedy progress in their children’s literacy. One parent expressed her appreciation, “My son couldn’t speak or understand any English in September. He cried so much when he got home. But now, he is so happy and he loves going to school. I can’t thank you enough! You must have done something magical!"
My Project
I have been using my computer to provide computer-based instruction all these years. I can't tell you enough how visual support from the web or PowerPoint presentations help my ESL students SEE the light! I also use "google translate" regularly in 5 different languages to help them understand difficult concepts. I always make sure that everyone understands what is going on in the classroom, so each student can connect his/her prior knowledge through visual presentations. When they FEEL the teacher cares so much about their learning, they work even harder! They love learning and I want to help them do just that!
Unfortunately, my computer is getting really old and slow!
Would you partner with ME to continue to help MY STUDENTS to "SEE and LEARN Through the World of Technology"? Thank you in advance for your generous support!
