Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Imagine eating nothing but foods that come from a box or package. This is a reality for many of the students in my classroom. Not only have they not eaten many types of fruits and vegetables, but they're unable to identify common produce items such as eggplants, sweet potatoes and cantaloupes.
My kids have little to no knowledge of where their food comes from.
In our poverty stricken urban neighborhood, they lack access to fresh fruits and vegetables. Moreover, they are unfamiliar with methods for growing and cooking fresh produce.
Our school does it's best to provide students with nutritious meals, but we fall far short of our goal. Even the "healthy" meals contain few, if any, fresh fruits or veggies.
My Project
We need basic supplies and tools like spades, trowels, soil and a composting bin in order for our school garden to commence. I plan to spend a minimum of an hour a day before or after school gardening alongside my students. From composting our leftovers to preparing the soil and harvesting our crops, we will learn about the life cycle of plants as well as the importance of starting a project and seeing it through.
I hope to inspire students to make healthier choices by growing vegetables and fruits they can then consume.
The effort and patience gardening requires will instill a good work ethic and help them become better citizens.
