My Project
Six years ago we began the ambitious project of building a community gardening and teaching space designed by students and operated exclusively by and for our school community. We have successfully built six rooftop 50 square foot growing beds, cultivated partnerships with local growers to supply plant seedlings, secured all the gardening tools and compost we need, and developed guidelines for the shared space.
We envision a shared space in which science classroom teachers lead hands-on demonstrations of concepts in their curriculum, social studies teachers discuss food sovereignty and food justice, school social workers facilitate social emotional learning sessions amongst beautiful plants, and after school, a community partner might lead staff, families, and students through a seedling workshops where they learn to grow their own food.
Through years of hard work, we have come close. The problem: the initial storage container we purchased is completely overfilled and broken down. We cannot utilize this beautiful space we've cultivated without the essential storage we need to keep it organized and thriving.
