My Project

Thank you for taking time to read about our project. My co-worker and I teach Garden Club at our school throughout the year. It is our goal to install four raised bed gardens for our students to plant and monitor during our Garden Club after school class.

We want to educate our students on how we interact with our food from the moment we plant the seeds to the time it reaches our plate.

Our students have taken trips to various farms over the years to pick pumpkins, but they have not been part of the process of modifying the soil, deciding which seeds to plant, and seeing their hard work come to fruition. These raised beds will allow us to fill an unused and unsightly piece of school property with beautiful vegetable beds and possibly a flower bed.

Last quarter, we were very excited to have enough dill to have the students participate in pickling cucumbers, carrots, and a beet or two. They were so excited to take the “pickles” home and share them with their families. We would love to have enough space to actually raise cucumbers, carrots and beets so students can be part of the entire process of picking the vegetables, preparing them, and then processing them in the refrigerator. Our goal is to engage students in raising vegetables so they can be an active participant and learn how food gets to the table.

We teach in a day and time where processed foods are the norm. We realize that Garden Club may not change their eating habits entirely, but it is our hope to open their minds about the unseen process that happens everyday. Thank you for taking time to read about this project.
