We've already seen tremendous support for the new school garden here at Mountain Pointe. It takes a lot of investment to nurture a garden, especially a brand new one. The encouragement from donations has given us the momentum we needed to get started. Now, it's time to prepare for upcoming events and next year's garden.
We are trying something new and giving out seed start kits using mostly recycled and compostable materials.
So far, we have assembled about fifty kits that we will give at our school's Sustainability Flea Market next week. This is a new event that our student council hopes will be a tradition from now on. It's a great chance for us to recruit new Garden Club members, educate about growing food, and promote sustainable practices. Additional seed kits will be send home with club members and used for future events.
Our seed start kits will include:
1. A small packet of seeds for the current growing season
2. Either a compostable pot or egg carton
3. A small container of seed start potting soil
4. A popsicle stick or reusable plant label for each type of seed in the kit
5. A small printout with care instructions for the plant type
Most of these items are recycled trash--egg cartons, used food containers for soil, even the boxes to carry the kits in are just used shipping boxes on their way to the recycling bin. We just need a few things to keep this system going, and that's what this project is for. We need seeds, of course. We also need more printer ink and cardstock for printing the care instructions.
