My high school is categorized as one of the lower performing schools in the county and we are in need of extra support and assistance for our students, who all experience high levels of poverty, violence, and educational inequity.
The majority of my students will either be the first or in the first generation of their families to attend college.
Statistically, African Americans, boys, and students whose parents had less education, were more likely to be suspended/expelled. Students who prepared more for their classes spent more hours on homework, and aspired to higher academic achievement were less likely to be disciplined at school. Helping students engage in school may be protective against disproportionate school discipline. Only 27% of them will graduate college within four years (compared to 42% of students whose parents graduated from college). But not our students, we all aspire to go to college.
The School Counselors are located in a separate building from the rest of the students; this helps with maintaining confidentiality. However, with our office in a separate building the door to enter is locked constantly so we can monitor the students that are entering and exiting. This can often cause disruptions during individual meetings with students when there are other students knocking on the door. Our department would benefit from cameras and echo shows so we can see who is at the door and have the chance to filter students who do not have an appointment or have a crisis and need to be seen ASAP. Having these items will assist with decreasing distractions from meetings with students, parents, and staff members.
