My students need a class set of colored pencils, erasers, colored paper, sticky notes, an electric pencil sharpener, and markers for engaging visual arts activities.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are a lively and energetic group of first graders who have a lot to say but need increased opportunities to be engaged in learning activities where they can read and write about topics and things that are important to them. Our school is located in the South Bronx, in an area with a very high concentration of poverty. Most, if not all, of my students, qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.
"A picture is worth a thousand words."
My Project
Students will use the resources actively participate in "See, Think and Wonder" activities. They will also use the resources to create and maintain a binder of artwork that they have been given an opportunity to observe, reflect, respond in writing, and to discuss their personal interpretations with their peers. They will use the coloring pencils, erasers and paper to see if they can accurately recreate a still life drawing based on the artwork they have viewed. The binders will be used to organize and sort the artwork. These 'tracks' in the snow will enable them to make their learning visible so they can SEE what they have mastered, still need to learn, any steps they need to take to and incorporate these newly learned skills into their reading, math and/or behavioral goals. They can use the sticky notes to respond in writing to the images.
No doubt, STUDENTS LEARN BEST when they are active participants in their own learning!
These images and artwork will serve as 'talking points' when they show and share their parents what they are learning, skills they have mastered, their learning goals and how they are preparing for success at the next level.
The goal is to have my students become active participants in their own learning and using the visual arts as a means. With your help, my students can do their best viewing, thinking and interpreting with this classroom project.
