My kindergarten to fifth grade students are the most wonderful kids in the world! Really! They are a very diverse population: African-American, Arabic, Asian, Caucasian, Hispanic, Pacific Islander, Native American...at least 20 languages or dialects are represented. We are a true melting pot population which is approximately 1,100 strong.
We are a Title I school with at least 90% of our students qualifying for free or reduced rate breakfast and lunch programs.
Many of our families are lead by a single parent, a grandparent or a recent immigrant who work at low-wage jobs and, frequently, multiple jobs just to "put food on the table".
My Project
Recently I purchased the teacher manuals for the music instruction curriculum "Gameplan". This curriculum has a 132 piece collection of correlated charts, visuals, and digital supports called Gameplan Gameboard. The materials support instruction for grades 1 to 5. They address instruction using xylophones, recorders, percussion, body percussion, and music literacy.
The combination of Gameplan and Gameplan Gameboard makes a powerful instructional tool.
The Gameboard materials are designed to be attractive to the students to encourage them to develop their musical skills, and they are "teacher approved and kid tested". In this day of fast-paced digital entertainment which makes "homemade" visuals boring, students need eye-catching learning materials.
