This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our scholars come from a diverse background in the inner-city of Washington DC. We are a global studies campus in the nation's capital; more than 20 countries are represented in our building.
Our entire student population qualifies as low-income or at-risk.
I serve a majority of young people from persistently disadvantaged households, but that is just a single facet of who they are. While 100% of my students may come from homes with little to no resources, 100% of my students are eager to learn, excited for an opportunity to showcase their talents, extremely creative and ready to share their story.
My Project
This will be part one of a multi bit project. We are trying to start a production team that will capture, edit, and produce films using their cell phones and a few 4k DSLR cameras. This team will learn the skills needed to create industry standard high-light reels, public service announcements, short films, and a digital yearbook. They will use technology to tell stories in an intriguing way.
Through filmmaking, we are inviting students to become artists.
Success as an artist requires discipline, planning, and critical thinking—but really, it requires students to feed off of their intellectual curiosity.
It will give our population the rare opportunity to participate in public dialogue, voice their opinions, and share their stories. Students will also walk away from this project with a skill that is extremely desirable in the current work industry.
