See Science in the Classroom; See Science in the World!

My students need tank wave, magnet bars, and wave apparatus to see science happening before their very eyes!

My Students

My students come in all shapes and sizes and they each bring something unique to the classroom. Many of my students come to me first thing in the morning to tell me about something they witnessed or discovered since last being in my classroom. My students are natural scientists and the creators of amazing questions!

Our classroom is a space where students experience a supportive, collaborative community.

Our classroom is a place where failure is part of the cycle of learning. Our classroom is a place where there is nowhere to hide misconceptions. We continually work together to help one another master new and old concepts!

My Project

Sixth grade science should be engaging and motivating. Sixth grade science should involve exploring and manipulating the world even when in the classroom. Sixth grade science should encourage students to ask 'what if' and 'but why.' Socially and emotionally, young middle school students are entering into a simultaneous phase of independence and peer codependence.

I want my science classroom to foster active engagement and wonder AND help students find support and community among their peers!

I know that the rock tumbler and compact wave machine will activate all kinds of questions. And I know the wave apparatus and magnets will get students wondering scientifically about how elements interact. My students will care to explore and thus intrinsically learn.

In our "Forces and Motion" unit one essential standard states that students 'understand the properties of waves and the wavelike property of energy in earthquakes, light and sound waves' and the three wave machines will be the focal points of four of our main, hands-on labs. And during our "Earth Systems, Structures and Processes" unit students are to 'understand the structure of the earth and how interactions of constructive and destructive forces have resulted in changes in the surface of the Earth over time.' The rock tumbler will be used on an ongoing basis during this unit to show, in real time, how rocks and minerals are changed during natural processes happening within our earth's layers. And the rock and mineral collection and magnets will demonstrate, during in-class labs, just how different the earth's layers are.

I am super stoked to share these items with my students. In eighteen years of teaching I have never had access to these cool science tools before!
