My students need hands on kits, games, and materials so they can really touch and understand the new science concepts we are teaching them instead of just looking at pictures in the book.
Imagine being a low income parent whose dreams came true by winning a spot (through a lottery) for their child to attend a highly sought after and very successful charter school, only to find out that due to budget concerns, there is no money to buy supplies for their child's newly added classroom
My students are mainly low income students whose parents have sought out our free charter school because of our high academic and behavior standards.
These families cannot afford private school, so winning a spot in our charter school is a dream come true for these very determined and committed children and parents. The students in our school come ready to learn every day and when we discovered that we did not have enough money to continue running our very successful, safe, happy, and highly rated school as before, the parents and teachers volunteered to clean the school, work in the lunchroom, do all of the landscaping, buy copy supplies, etc. to keep the school they believed in operational. But sadly, that left no money to furnish my added, completely empty kindergarten room. We have already asked so much from our parents and teachers, so we are turning to Donors Choose in hopes of keeping this amazing school and my new classroom operating at the high academic level we expect.
My Project
The hands on science materials we are asking for will help my kindergarten students acquire a deep and sound science foundation for them to build on for many school years to come. Pictures in books do not provide students with the opportunity to touch and experience the concepts they are being taught. Pictures do not afford kindergarteners opportunity to learn while actually exploring how things like magnets and sinking and floating objects work in the real world. Studies have shown that when students have the opportunity to perform experiments instead of just reading about it, they come away with a much better and deeper understanding of that concept. Picture 80 kindergarteners using magnets, sinking and floating objects, and creating plant diagrams. The learning and smiles would be unmeasurable!
Economic status should not determine if your child gets to attend a highly successful and safe school.
Our charter school makes dreams come true for low income families that have very smart and dedicated children. We are educating some of tomorrow's leaders and every dollar we spend on them will only benefit us for many years to come. Our families, teachers, and students believe in our school, won't you please also help us make dreams come true?
