Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Every half hour I work with a new group of students, from 3 year olds to 5th graders. All have communication impairments. The younger ones eagerly learn about themes, such as foods and animals, while the older ones, grades K-5, also study their grade level curriculum. They love relevant activities!

I work with up to 50 children.

They all have something to say, but for many of them, talking or understanding is difficult. They may cope with autism or other developmental disorders, cerebral palsy, stuttering, hearing loss and other issues. This is a high poverty school, and the children appreciate what they are given, whether it is a pencil or a small eraser. The school may be the only place they go where they can use technology. The students come from several countries, and they want to learn. The school tries hard to give the students an excellent education. Like all children, they want to be successful. Sometimes that means using a great app that allows them to communicate their wants and needs. For others, it means playing a game online that is geared to their skills and knowledge. All of them benefit from access to the riches on the web - and they are so eager to use technology!

My Project

This iPad will allow my students to play games that teach important communication skills, such as categorizing and how to talk to a new friend. It will also allow those in kindergarten and up to go on "virtual field trips" to the continent they are studying, so that they can "be" in the forest with certain animals or in a desert tent. They will be able to learn the words for concepts before their teacher explains them in class, so they can understand her more easily. Some of them will use special apps that speak for them, with an ease that delights them! At times, one student will be able to use the iPad to practice a skill while another student gets a few minutes of individualized instruction on a different skill. This allows both students to be able to learn more during the session.

An iPad will allow my students to experience new places relevant to their curriculum.

Due to their disabilities, some of my students relate better to technology than to people. They may be more willing to try carefully chosen games on the iPad to learn new skills than try other teaching strategies. Other students will get to play an educational game on the iPad as a reward for learning less-preferred skills. An iPad will be an "ear-opening" as well as an "eye-opening" experience for many of these children!
