Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
One of my students major deficit is in the area of comprehension, especially with reading material. By using sentence strips, and drawing materials they can retell through their pictures their comprehension of what they have heard or read, which the can be generalized into other areas.
My students' Autism is their primary disability.
There are many areas of academic, social acceptance, and comprehension that they struggle with on a daily basis. We are constantly looking for functional, creative ways to present and encourage the learning process. Resources have become increasingly difficult to obtain due to financial constraints and the very specific in nature of material that is needed to effectively educate them.
The students are visual learners, which is why the material we need are so crucial. The more we expose them to pictures, which tie the reading and lessons together, the more their comprehension and understanding increases.
It is a very slow process and by having the visual supports along with language, (which is extremely hard for them to process), the lessons and material we present then becomes clear to them.
The students attend an inner city school which has a population of approximately 1200 students.
My Project
The materials we are requesting are to aid support to our students in their understanding and interpretation of what they have learned. This is extremely difficult for them. By having them depict their understanding in a picture, it can then be interpreted at their level of understanding, and a determination can be made if what they have retained is correct, and where to go next. Their visual representations help us in creating lessons that are individual to them, and tells us where their difficulty lies. One huge area of difficulty is in their writing ability, and by having them draw pictures, we can then assess the appropriate level they are at. Then we can start introducing material or books into areas that are of less interest. At this point, the students have increased their levels of comprehension and are more likely to be familiarized with strategies of recall.
They will have learned how to isolate detail, draw a visual representation, and hopefully have their interest.
Since each one of our students are so different in learning style, academic and cognitive abilities, and social awareness, we are continually trying to obtain as much varied learning material to make them all successful.
It is a challenge, given the diversity of each, but we pride ourselves on going above and beyond, many times spending our weekends making what we need so badly. They all deserve to have the same material as their typical counterpart, but financial constraints limit us.
