Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

How do you get students hungry for reading? It has everything to do with the books you guide them to grab. Imagine a group of non-reading adults walking into a public library, most of them would have difficulty choosing books! Self-selecting books that are both gripping and "just right" is key.

Our students have many obstacles to overcome.

Lack of support at home can make many of the students give up. They are only in fourth grade! We have a variety of learning needs. Majority read below level. We have students that have language goals (8%), identified learning disabilities (22%), 504 plans (10%), ELL support (22%), and receiving Tier 3 interventions in math-(non-ESE) (26%). We have four ELL’s, 3 of which are brand new citizens to the United States. In our classroom, 93% of our students receive free or reduced lunch. Two student’s residential statuses are homeless. We have two students with PTSD and anxiety from being placed in foster care. Thirty-three students out of forty-one, speak another language at home fluently (including Spanish and Vietnamese). Out of our 41 students, 44% of them did not pass the FCAT Math last year. Exactly 34% of our students have been retained in previously. This isn't including students diagnosed with ADHD.

My Project

I walked into my classroom as a first year teacher and quickly realized how important it was for me to have a vast classroom library. I had ZERO books. I couldn't let that impede my students' love for reading. That quickly changed! Over the course of eight years, I devoted my energy into developing my classroom library into something that would put a public library to shame. The problem? Now my classroom doesn't have proper storage to make it easy to find the book that they are hooked on! These DVD storage units are about the same size as a chapter book. I will organize the books by "Genres" in one unit and "Authors" in the other. Now my students will locate books that they want and find the rest of that series later on the 2 large spinning bookshelves and swivel bearings.!

Confidence is key.

When a student finds that author, genre or even series that they just can't get enough of, my job is done. At that point, they take off as readers and will take more risks with new genres and authors. I don't teach students to read to answer a bunch of standardized questions. I want my students to be the adults that CAN walk into a public library and continue their love for reading for years to come. The first step is finding that ONE book!
