My students need copies of Gene Luen Yang's Secret Coders books about computer science. We are excited about our upcoming Skype visit with him as he is the National Ambassador for Young People's Literature!
We are working hard to build a culture of creating at our school. We are an Imagination Chapter through an international foundation and we are a SciGirls partner. Events like our Cardboard Challenge and the Inventor's Challenge foster curiosity and creativity. We started a makerspace in our Media Center two years ago and this year we opened a STEM room.
About 74% of our students receive free or reduced price lunch and we have had a weekend food program for the past nine years.
We strive to provide all students access to technology, books, and materials that they might not have at home. DonorsChoose and donors like you help make that possible!
My Project
Even my reluctant readers love graphic novels! This project will add 12 copies of Gene Luen Yang's books about computer programming. Students will be eager to read the Secret Coders series since they will be Skyping with the author in April. Graphic novels often have advanced vocabulary and complex plots while the reader is supported with context clues from the illustrations. EC students and struggling students seem to do especially well with comics because they are able to process the text as many times and as long as they need so that they can better understand it.
We won't just stop with reading his books.
Students will have a chance to practice coding as well as draw their own comics. This is a great project that combines several areas of STEAM.
