Our school serves students in kindergarten through eighth grade. More than 85% of our children come from low-income households with little access to books or media. Students I work with often complain they are not allowed to go to the public library because of safety issues or lack of adult assistance due to working parents and guardians. Without access to books, our students often enter middle school behind their national grade-level peers.
Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, gang violence, and poverty, my students have a strong desire to learn.
They recognize the importance of their education and are fiercely committed to their learning as a vehicle for changing their situations and community.
My Project
As we move through the school year, we often find that our supplies begin to dwindle. Materials get used up and technology is worn down.
New headphones and pencils will allow our learning to continue through the end of the year without interruption to the current routines of our classroom.
We use these supplies on a daily basis, which means they are subject to wear and tear.
Headphones allow students to participate in reading through audiobooks, aid diverse learners with text-to-speech access, and provide students with listening opportunities in small group rotations. Providing pencils for my students helps us focus what is important without additional distractions to our learning.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
