Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach second grade at a small early childhood school in the Bronx. My students, whom I have taught for two years, have become terrific readers, and are bright, thoughtful, and curious people who love to read, and love to learn. One of the most important and exciting parts of our school day is when the students meet for literature circles. In these meetings, they sit with a group of classmates who all chose to read the same book, discuss the plot, character, theme, and their favorite parts. These disussions help them to become both critical readers and also lifelong readers who thoroughly enjoy a good book. I also base much of the reading instruction that I do in class on the books that they read during literature circles. My students enjoy literature circles so much that they they go through a novel in less than two weeks. As a result, I'm less than halfway through the school year, and already running out of literature circle books. Please help me to keep this wonderful, important program going by providing more high-quality literature for my students to learn from and love.
