Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My 26 second grade students are from a vibrant, diverse community, and most of the students speak a language other than English at home. My kids and their families are determined to succeed, and together, we are making incredible gains. In the past years, our school has had some of the largest academic gains of any elementary school in the entire school district. As it is my second year teaching, I am excited to grow and learn with and from my sweet 7 and 8-year-olds this year. They deserve the best, and this is where you can help.
My Project
With a new group of second graders comes a new group of interests and learning needs! We want to fill our classroom with the supplies necessary to meet the needs of all of our students.
As a class, we want to fill our library with exciting texts at our levels to get readers engaged and excited about reading!
This includes fun characters such as Elephant and Piggy and Dear Dragon as well as nonfiction texts about animals, physical science, and space. I have many students striving to be on grade level this year, and getting exciting books into their hands will help them grow toward being on grade-level. The magnetic letters will help students practice their sight words and building key vocabulary words. As we embark on our nonfiction unit, students will have exciting books in which to practice their reading strategies!
We are also so excited for the other classroom materials including meter strips, whiteboards and markers, writing pens, and other supplies to continue our math and writing learning! We will use our whiteboards to practice solving word problems, which is an important second grade standard that requires a lot of practice! Our writing pens keep writers engaged an writing for the whole writing block and encourages them to simply cross out a mistake and keep going (instead of erasing a whole page).
