Ms. Holbrook from Charlotte NC is requesting books through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need 8 copies each of 5 books, including "Because of Winn-Dixie" and "Stone Fox", 26 copies of "Mr. Docker Is off His Rocker!" and 1 copy of "Mr. Sunny Is Funny!".

I teach a wonderfully inspiring group of 2nd graders. Our school is 90% economically disadvantaged but that does not change their burning desire to learn and achieve. They inspire me on a daily basis to be the best teacher that I can be to insure they will have the same experiences and opportunities other children are afforded.
My students love reading! They also love to read novels during small group reading time. Many of my students tell me that it is their favorite time of the day! However, the novel sets that our school has are either not appropriate for my 2nd grade readers or falling apart. One of my reading groups just finished the novel, Stone Fox, and they loved it; however, it was difficult to get through because the students had to share books and many of the books were falling apart and missing pages. Our school just does not have the means to purchase newer novel sets for our students. One of my goals as a teacher is to foster a love of reading at an early age. My second grade students have a deep love for reading, especially novels, and I want to do everything in my ability to provide them with educational, interesting, fun, and complete novels.
The solution to this problem is very easy. We need new novels so the students can read without having to share, or having missing or torn pages! One reading strategy that we teach is to look back in the text in order to find and substantiate answers, so each student having their own copy of the novel is invaluable. Also, the selection of books we currently have is very lacking, so getting these new novel sets would further motivate and excite my student's love of reading and learning.
You will make it possible for my students to have the same experiences and opportunities that students in higher income schools have. Many of my kids view school as a safe haven, and with your help their favorite time of the day, novel study time, can be made all the more powerful!
