My students need 73 new books, including The Berenstain Bears, Arthur books, as well as popular chapter books with loved characters like Heidi Heckelbeck and Katie Woo.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"Reading one book is like eating one potato chip," said Mrs. Lesser from "So You Want to be a Wizard" by Diane Duane. This is the perfect description of my second grade students. So far this year, my students have already read 1,300 books and are always eager to read more.
I teach 17 amazing second graders in a Title I school.
They arrive to school each day ready to learn and eager to see what the new day will bring. I have a diverse population of students, who have hard working families. These students don't always have the opportunity to visit libraries or access technology outside the school day. My students have mixed abilities and for some, English is a second language. We use a variety of reading activities daily to help build reading skills for all students at their level.
My Project
I have taught intermediate grades for the last 12 years, now I am teaching second and our classroom library does not have a large selection of books on their level. The books I am requesting have been carefully selected based on my students' reading interests and levels. They use independent reading time daily to help build comprehension and fluency skills at a level that is most appropriate for their reading development. Adding these books to our classroom will provide more opportunities for reading and growth in my students.
Each year my goal as a teacher is to instill a love of reading in all my students.
We use a motivational program to help encourage our students to read. I foresee my students discovering characters and genres they love and becoming intrinsically motivated to read with the addition of these books. In addition, we will begin to develop reading stamina by using the chapter books to help my second graders learn how to read longer texts and retain the information read.
