My Students

Our school serves an amazing population of students, including young immigrants from many countries all over the world! My perspective as a teacher allows me the opportunity to watch children who have grown up here in Texas embrace new class members and grow together to create a truly unique community.

It is a privilege to welcome students and their families to the United States of America and introduce them to our culture while learning so much about theirs at the same time.

So much of new learning must be connected to prior experiences and when students come from a variety of backgrounds, it is often a challenge to activate prior knowledge. One of the best ways I have found to create a common starting ground is through literature! This year, I am moving to 2nd grade and I am going provide a literature rich environment for my students so that we all can grow individually and grow together as a community.

My Project

I have the privilege of teaching 2nd grade for the first time this year and I am eager to get the school year started! After conferring with experienced 2nd grade teachers, I've compiled a list of things that will make this year even better. This project will supply my classroom with two of those items at the top of the list!

Second Graders are a special group of kids--so much growing and maturing during this year!

One of the first items on the list is a large group rug for the students to sit on during Interactive Read Aloud, Shared Reading, Math mini-lessons, Interactive Smart Board Science and Social Studies lessons--this list could go on and on! This rug will be the center of our classroom community and having a special place for everyone to sit will help each child feel like a part of our community.

Phonics, word study and spelling are in integral part of the reading curriculum in a second grade classroom. These magnetic letter sets have been recommended to me by multiple colleagues based on their 2-color system (less confusion; easier to distinguish consonants and vowels) and of course the organized storage which makes the letters so much easier to use.
