Help me give my students a love of reading through a whole grade level book study where they will explore, read independently and dive further into the story elements and whole class shared love of reading.
Our second grade team would like the opportunity to introduce our students to a whole class novel study. With this novel study, students would be working on their listening and speaking skills, comprehension and story retelling as they participate in discussions and activities about the text. At the second grade level, students need these skills to build confidence in reading chapter books for future grade levels.
The goals for this project are to increase reading and listening comprehension as well as vocabulary and fluency.
Novel studies can build community in the classroom, keep students interested in reading, and help develop stronger vocabulary and decoding skills. Additionally, they can also help build stamina and improve reading fluency.
As new second grade students for the upcoming 24-25 school year, this will be their first introduction to chapter books. We want them to be excited about reading and prepare them for the next level(s) of academics.
