My students need Boogie Boards to practice writing words, headphones as our old ones continue to break and a couple of new reading and math games to keep our stations fun as we prepare for second grade!
Our school is very unique due to the diversity of our students. Half of our population lives in poverty surrounded by drugs, violence and poor living conditions. Recently, the school has changed the Title I pull out model for the lowest 25% of our population. Instead of getting extreme remediation during language arts, these kiddos now miss specials including PE, art and music. These specials times are when I see my kids smile the most, no matter what is happening at home. Music, art and PE are typically named as "favorite subjects" even though the kids do not attend those classes.
My Project
As we are wrapping up the year, we are looking for new and exciting ways to extend our learning! Boogie boards (similar to an etch-a-sketch) are a fun and interesting way to practice handwriting and writing various words in isolation. We can also use these for math addition/subtraction facts and utilize them for a fun game of "Showdown." I see these being used in small groups of 6 students to spark excitement to push students further in their learning.
As the year continues, our old headphones keep breaking, and we are trying to replace them as they break.
Students use headphones with technology activities throughout our room involving computers, iPads and a listening station for listening to books during literacy stations. Using technology keeps students interested in learning and differentiates with the different apps or programs available.
Hangman, story cubes and the dice math game will be interesting new additions to our "fast finishers" box. The "fast finishers" box is for students who complete their work and are looking for an extra challenge. This box is also used as a reward for students who complete all their work throughout the week. These will be fun new additions as we prepare ourselves for second grade with addition, subtraction and extension of our writing skills!
