I am a general music teacher in an elementary school in the south side of Chicago. My classes include teaching general music to students in grades K-8. Many of my students sing in community choirs, but the school I teach at lacks a complete music textbook set. I am in the early stages of building up an adequate supply of classroom instruments, textbooks, recordings, and dance props to provide these young musicians with the opportunity to formally study music in school. For this project I am requesting three items, which in entirety will constitute the second grade music curriculum. The curriculum set requested, “Musicplay” by Denise Gagne, includes the teachers guide with lesson plans and CDs. The proposal also includes 25 student books to accompany the CDs. In the student books, students both read the words to songs and they learn to read standard musical notation. This is an especially attractive feature of this music series, as I teach in a school that is seeking to raise reading scores. I am especially interested in this series because it will provide one more opportunity for my students to practice reading skills. Students also learn musical vocabulary, instruments, and music history in the student books. Each weekly lesson features a new music game from which the musical concepts in the curriculum are taught. The material supports and enhances science, social studies, and language arts curriculums, and is sequenced for use within Kodaly and Orff music programs I am also requesting a listening resource kit consisting of CDs of music from a variety of genres and styles. Most of my students have not had the opportunity to learn about classical or jazz music, and the listening resource kit would allow students the opportunity to learn about the musical form of unfamiliar music. In later projects I will request curriculum for upper grade levels. My eventual goal is to obtain a complete set of student and teacher music books, in addition to recordings for each grade level through donors choose. I sincerely appreciate the generosity of all individuals and groups who contribute to donors choose towards this long-term project. Thank you.
