My Students
Help us to learn math! We need new math stations to help us learn and keep us engaged!
Last year, I taught my kind, fun, and hard working students first grade, and next year we will move up to second grade together!
Most of my students live within a few blocks from our school, and they have a wide range of interests, needs, and backgrounds. Some of my students have two parents, some have one, and some live with grandparents. Some of my students have many books at their house, and some have very few. Many of my students live in housing projects near the school, and many others live in large houses. At least one of my students was homeless last year. At home, my students speak Estonian, Russian, Oromo, Chinese, English, and Samoan.
My wonderful students love animals, reading, Sighty (our class dragon who teaches us sight words), freeze dance, making comic books, designing marble runs, and math stations. All of my students are amazing, beautiful, and talented kids who inspire me by trying their best in school every day.
My Project
On the last day of school, one of my students wrote me a letter. She asked, "Are we going to have more space in the math stations next year?" Her question is a question I hear from my students frequently. My students love choosing a center or game from the many giant hanging bags in our classroom to practice their math skills after our math lessons. This system empowers kids and keeps them engaged by giving them choice in what they learn, while giving them interesting math tools to work with. Because my students and I are moving up to second grade together, my kids have learned, practiced, and played with the materials already in our classroom. We need new math stations to help us to learn second grade math!
This diverse collection of requested math materials has something for each of the 26 second graders in my class.
Kids who love to read can practice math skills while reading books. Students who love to play games will practice their math and social problem solving skills at the same time! This set of math centers offers students opportunities to solve math problems using drawing, writing, and other students. These stations will help my second graders to feel, play with, and love math!
