This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Have you ever wanted to be good at something so badly that it made your stomach ache? Some students are great readers. Some students are great writers. Many of them you can see the light shine bright in their eyes when they do math. We desperately need manipulatives to help them be successful.
My second grade class is located in an urban community in NY.
They are enthusiastic, bright and full of hope. They are hard workers and they enjoy learning. Although they live in the community they are from various parts of the world. They are 7 and 8 year olds expecting to get the best education possible.
My Project
Having these manipulatives would help my students tremendously especially ESL and low level students. It would allow them to communicate and express their thinking and understanding through non verbal communication. Many students learn better using hands on manipulatives and through using visual aides. They will use counters to help with addition and subtraction. They will use money to practice identifying value and adding money. The time cards will help students practice telling time.
This project is important because second grade is a crucial time in their life.
These skill are necessary in order to be prepared for state exams that are required in third grade. They need to leave second grade with a strong math foundation so they are prepared and ready to learn new skills they will need in the future.
