As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school, my students are faced with many challenges, both inside and outside of school. Many of them begin school with little to no social skills, due to them staying home with only parents, siblings, or neighbors until school age. Because of this, I am wanting to keep their learning simple and meaningful.
Most of my students come from homes where both parents are working and aren't home to read to them, play with them, or teach them the importance of sharing and having tolerance.
The majority also receive free/reduced-price lunch based on their socioeconomic status. Although I cannot control their home lives, I want to create a nurturing place for them to create a love of learning and a passion for a brighter future.
My Project
This will be my first year looping up with my students. Since we will be learning all new skills, we need new books and storage supplies. In this DonorsChoose.org project, I'm focusing on the books that we will need for our literacy lessons.
Each book will be used during our whole group reading time.
We will dive into each of them, learning new vocabulary, understanding the characters, and finding the hidden messages in books such as "Officer Buckle and Gloria."
As we discover the deeper meaning within our stories, students will use the books to help strengthen the writing as well. During reading rotations, the class will use our stories to write about our learning and what lessons we've been taught.
