Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, they come to school each day excited and ready to learn.

My students are creative, caring, and motivated.

They enjoy playing with friends, helping out in the classroom, giving lots and lots of hugs, and most importantly learning. Many of them are being raised in single parent households and all of them receive a free lunch based on their socioeconomic status. Regardless of the obstacles they face, I spend each day ensuring that they have the best educational experience possible. From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom I focus on their potential and growth while they are with me. I may not be able to control their home lives, however, I can certainly control their experience during the school day. By doing this in a creative and positive way, I am hopeful to inspire even our earliest learners to continue on a path of academic excellence.

My Project

In our district, we serve a high population of students with ASD, ADHD, and ADD. These students face numerous challenges in their daily lives academically, socially and emotionally. Giving them a choice in the classroom, as simple as which type of seat they choose fosters confidence and ownership over their learning. Many students lack control over their home environments, so giving them a sense of control at school will help them feel secure and independent. Children need to move a lot! Flexible seating allows them to wobble, rock, bounce, lean, or stand, which increases oxygen flow to the brain. We need options including lap desks, wobble chairs, wobble cushions and yoga balls. Help our students bounce and rock their way to greatness!
