My Students

My students are curious, wiggly, inquisitive little people who need a place to belong in the classroom. They love to move around the classroom and a special place on the carpet makes them smile. A space on the carpet to read, learn, and socialize to build that classroom community. Many of my students comes from a low income home. Many of my students feel at home in our classroom. Besides having their own desk they now have a special spot on the carpet. A place where it can’t be taken away from them.

My Project

It’s 8:00 and it’s time for our morning meeting. The teacher has called them to come to the carpet in the front of the classroom. The students rush to the carpet and begin to crawl around trying to find the spot they want to sit on the carpet. “Ouch!” This is the sound of someone getting their fingers stepped on. “Move!” This is the sound of a child trying to fit in a space that is not big enough and ends up on someone’s lap. The transition to the carpet begins to become a very long process. It would take less transition time with everyone having their own spot to sit.
