Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach multiple classes each day at a title one school where over 90 percent of students are on free or reduced lunch. Together we talk about how important it is to work hard and where that will lead us. My students consistently ensure that they complete each task to their best ability and make use of every minute that they are in the classroom. My students have found a way to push through and really hone in on the skills necessary to grow personally and academically. Unfortunately, during Hurricane Harvey, many of my students lost not only their homes, but all of their belongings too. They can easily recall the traumatic events that took place during that disaster. Many of them worried about how to get out of the water, where to go after, and where their next meal would come from. When they come to school, I have an opportunity to help them forget about the struggle of having to start over and rebuild. My hope is to make them feel as comfortable as possible and create and environment that allows them to learn to highest degree.
My Project
My students need the comfy floor seats and the folding tables to encourage not only having choice in their classroom, but to also stay invested in their own learning and education. My students will be able to come in and find a spot in the classroom where they will be the most successful. The students will choose floor seats the majority of the time! The tables will also help to offer more seating options and areas for the students to sit. My goal is to make our entire classroom full of flexible seating options and areas. With all of the pressure from STAAR, this gives students an opportunity to use voice and choice in the classroom. Students are responsible for their own learning and these tools will help students to focus better!
