My students need a comfortable place to lay back and read a book. During their writing time, I’d like them to have a option to move and rock to help foster their creative thinking.
My students absolutely love coming to school each and every day ready to explore, question, and learn. There is a great sense of community and trust among them as they are able to apply and share their thinking and knowledge with each other without worry or fear.
One area that some of my little ones struggle with is working independently during reading and writing time.
While many can sit and work in a standard chair and desk, others need to kneel, stand, lay back, and/or wiggle around while reading or writing.
I would like to provide them with a variety of seating options that can help them develop independence during this time. When students are in a comfortable setting that suits their individual learning style, they are more focused and successful.
My Project
Second graders are great at working together in pairs and small groups, but many find it difficult to work independently. Some of this is due to restricted seating choices. While my classroom does offer a few alternatives to the standard desk and chair, I do not have any choice to sit and wiggle/rock while writing. The few beanbags chairs I have are tattered, worn and torn and look more like a wrinkled blanket.
I am conferencing and or teaching small groups, other students are expected to work independently.
This can be difficult for some students. By providing them with seating options that fit their learning styles, they will be more likely to be able to work to their full potential.
In general people are more productive when they are comfortable. These wobble chairs and beanbag chair are a good start for my kiddos success.
