Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is a Title 1 school where 68% of the students are on free and reduced lunch. Over half of our 900 students are English Language Learners. We offer dual language programs to teach students a second language. For the students in this program, they are able to demonstrate mastery of a second language by the end of fifth grade.

Many students in our community have been displaced because of Hurricane Harvey and are living with family members.They are struggling financially and emotionally.

Even with all of the obstacles our students have faced this school year, our campus has earned the distinction of a No Excuses University campus. We diligently work to encourage our students to plan ahead and work hard so they can continue their education after high school.

My Project

By having various seating opportunities for students to enjoy doing independent reading, the student will successfully grow as readers. Each day the students will be excited about sitting down with a good book. Time spent in a just right book at school will allow me to observe and monitor my reading students as they apply the reading skills they learn during each lesson.

This type of flexible seating will allow me to teach students how to find a cozy spot to get lost in a good book.

By learning and practicing this at school, then the students will be more apt to spend time finding a cozy reading spot at home as well.

With the opportunity to find a cozy seat, the students will successfully grow as an independent reader throughout the school year.
