Seating Makes Cents: Learning Financial Literacy Through Flexible Seating
Help me give my students wobble seats, balance chairs, and wireless headphones so they will have flexible seating options as they apply financial literacy.
My first-grade students are part of an integrated classroom that celebrates all of their special needs, gifts, and talents. As a class, they come together from many different cultures, languages, and abilities. They all work hard and love to be challenged. However, sometimes they need help meeting these challenges.
Every child can succeed; sometimes they just need different tools to help them on their journey!
My classroom is a happy place where all students believe that they are able to succeed and that they are supported both in and out of school. School is a place where we work hard and persevere through challenges. We work in large groups, small groups, partnerships and individually throughout the day.
My Project
It's not a secret that students are able to better focus when they are able to move and are empowered when given choice over their learning. The majority of the time most students are seated in standard chairs. I want to provide my students with more opportunities to move as well as have voice and choice over their learning. In addition, I want to provide them with meaningful experiences to apply financial literacy concepts.
"Seat Cents" will not only provide students with a meaningful learning opportunity to practice various financial literacy concepts, but it will also provide my students with the flexible furniture they so desperately need.
I know students will be so excited to have more seating options in the Math Area of the Classroom. This project will provide my students with balance chairs and wobble cushions and chairs for seating with movement, and wireless headphones to use for quiet seating options where they can sit while they learn about financial literacy during Math Centers. Students will earn "Seat Cents" for demonstrating positive behaviors such as being respectful, responsible, safe, and kind. Students can also earn "Seat Cents" for working hard, and finishing work teaching them that we have to work hard for our money!
Students will be able to spend their "Seat Cents" on different furniture options. Not only will they practice counting money to purchase an opportunity to sit in one of our new seating options, they will also practice saving vs. spending as they decide whether to spend their "Seat Cents" to sit in a more affordable seating option or save up to sit in a more expensive option. Your support will provide my students with sensory seating to help them get their wiggles out, increase focus, and apply financial literacy concepts through authentic learning.
