My Students
I have been teaching for 30 years, and I am in the process of transforming my classroom into a "flexible seating learning center". "Studies consistently showed that classroom design matters to how children engage, participate and ultimately stay involved in their learning experience (Fernandes, Huang & Rinaldo, 2011; Gremmen, Van den Berg, Segers & Cillessen, 2016 and Marx, Fuhrer & Hartig, 1999)."
My students come from a variety of ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds.
One thing they all have in common is being given a choice. The classroom is not mine, it should be theirs. I have a couch, bean bags, and camping chairs in the room, and the kids LOVE to use these instead of a school chair. School chairs do not give a range of motion without damaging the casters. I hate that I have to tell the kids they can't lean back in their chairs. Kids need to move! They are excited when they get to choose where they can sit for the day. You can tell by their faces and discussions, they take this choice very seriously.
My Project
I would like to order 6 Learniture Active Learning Chairs for my 6th graders. For many students, it is difficult to stay still for extended periods of time. Even adults struggle to sit through long meetings.
The Active Learning chairs will allow the students to wiggle and move without disturbing the other students.
In addition to "brain breaks" during the day, I have several other seating options such as bean bags, stadium chairs, and a couch. The number of disruptions in my classroom has been dramatically reduced since I introduced flexible seating this year. The Active Learning chairs would be the perfect addition to my classroom to promote learning.
