Seating for Engagement

My students need seating choices that support movement throughout the day like floor level cushions and wobble cushions on regular chairs. We need storage options for their materials so students can easily move between the seating options.

My Students

We are in a very low-income part of our city. At our school there is more than 90% of students who receive free breakfast and lunch each day. With challenges outside of the classroom, we make an effort as a community to ensure each child has a safe place for learning and growth.

With only one recess a day, these students struggle to maintain focus.

They need movement opportunities throughout the instructional day to boost their engagement and physical strength!

My Project

We do our best work when we are comfortable. This rule is no different for children! With only 20 minutes a day for recess, my students need to move and get their energy out in a supportive way. Providing positive opportunities for movement while learning will support student focus and engagement in their learning.

Many boys are especially challenged when asked to remain seated for hours on end, resulting in outbursts of energy or physical aggression.

Having many different seating choices that provide small movement opportunities will allow them to build core strength, exert small, but necessary amount of energy continually and thus be more engaged in their learning.

We are looking forward to having a table of all wobble chairs, all yoga cushions, and a table of regular chairs with the wobble pads. With changing desks every day we need a place to store all of our desk materials like binders, books, and spirals. This is where the Sterilite Drawers come in handy! Students will be able to take the drawers with them to the desk of their choice each day. Having a place to store materials will make our transitions smooth so we can spend more time being comfortable while learning!
