I teach in a title 1 school in Oakland, CA in heart of Chinatown, where 71% of my students are English language learners, speaking a variety of languages. My students come from diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds, Chinese, Vietnamese, Hispanic, Iranian and Filipino and African American, to name a few 80% of my students qualify for the federal free or reduced lunch program. My students come into class everyday eager to learn. My students love working together to solve problems, finish projects and build our classroom community as kind, caring individuals and community members.
My Project
Students feel empowered by having some degree of choice and control over their environment. Flexible seating allows students to choose where they work and with whom. It also allows them to change their location and positions as needed.
Flexible seating will allow movement for my students which increases oxygen flow to the brain, blood flow and core strength.
It also helps keep young minds more alert and focused.
Flexible seating encourages students to find their best spot to stay calm, focused and productive. Maybe the chair is too uncomfortable and they would prefer the seated cushion? Or perhaps the lap desk would provide a student to stretch their legs? Comfortable students are engaged students! And flexible seating helps make learning fun.
