Seat Sacks: Fostering Responsibility

My students need 30 seat sacks that will connect to the backs of their chairs so they can keep their belongings in them.

My Students

Entering the world of Kindergarten can be an exciting yet scary time for many children. For some it is their first time at school and many of them are unaware of how to "do school." It is difficult for them to keep track of their supplies which interferes with their learning.

I am a kindergarten teacher in a Title 1 school located in an urban area.

In my classroom alone 4 separate languages are spoken and over half come from economically challenged homes. Traditionally these students have never had rich learning experience and so it is my job to provide them with a bright inviting classroom where their ideas can be validated and their knowledge expanded.

My Project

The seat sacks (a storage bag that fits over the back of a student’s chair) is a solution for classrooms that use tables as opposed to the traditional individual student desks. I know that these seat sacks are durable and will provide my students the storage and independence they need to be fantastic kindergarten learners! The seat sack is wonderful because it is so easily accessible to the students and they love having an individual storage place for their materials. The seat sack also fosters a sense of responsibility and independence in students because they are responsible for keeping their seat sacks neat and keeping track of all of their supplies.

Seat sacks on the backs of all chairs will allow students to have their own belongings close to them at all times.

I feel it is so important for each child to be able to call something their own in the room and their seat sack will act as their own personal space. I would use these seat sacks to promote organizational skills, which so many young students need in order to become successful scholars.
