As a fourth grade teacher in a high need school, I try my very best to give my students everything they deserve, but financially this can be difficult. With recent budget cuts New York City public school teachers only receive $150 a year for classroom supplies, which leads to many problems.
My school consists of a large number of students who speak English as a second language. Many of my students are immigrants from Bangladesh and India. The students in my school are wonderful and so motivated to learn. Along with all the curriculum that must be taught in the classroom, I also try to teach my students important life skills. Being neat and organized is something I constantly stress to my students, yet this is hard to model in a small classroom, where students don't even have enough room in their desks to store all their books.
The students in my class have many textbooks and notebooks in their desks, which is GREAT, however the small desks don't fit all their books and supplies. The books that don't fit in my students desks wind up on the floor which causes many problems: the students often trip over the books and items get destroyed and lost. My students need to get organized and one way to start would be seat pockets for the back of the students' chairs, where they can put all the materials that do not fit in their desks.
Having seat pockets for students to put on the back of their chairs for storing books and supplies could alleviate our big problem of small desks. It is essential for students to learn to be neat and organized. The classroom should be a place where everything is in it's place. Please help my class and I to have a neat and organized classroom. Please contribute and help us make room for books!
