Help me give my students much needed alternative items to help us focus and move forward toward success. We would be so excite d to get balance balls as an option in our room to improve focusing.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I have a 12:1:1 special education class with disabilities that vary from the emotionally disturbed, physical or learning disabilities, to those on the autism spectrum. My school is located in an area of Brooklyn where parents are struggling economically and now with the increase of rent in the neighborhood, their life has become a little more problematic. Some of these problems come from not finding affordable housing and living in shelters to not having the resources at home to learn necessary skills. Some come to school with no book bag, notebooks or pencils because it was simply too expensive for the parents to purchase. I refuse to believe they can't learn. It is my belief that every child has an ideal way of learning and we just have to find the best way for them.
My students are in danger of being left behind in this ever-changing world in which we live and they struggle to keep up.
My children don't learn the traditional way and so we need to adjust to help catch up.
My Project
My students are a wonderful mix of 12:1:1 personalities, each with their own needs in order to stay focused. Who can stay focused for long if you are uncomfortable in your seat and you are in the same room all day. Here is where these options would come in handy in our small setting. Allowing the children the option of various seating choices to allow for comfort will help improve focusing in our room. My children with sensory issues will have options versus just the hard chair or standing. The more options available the better for my students.
My students are already facing some challenges academically, I am looking to help them climb one obstacle by tackling the sensory aspect of our home away from home.
My students are eager to learn each day but after a while, who wants to sit still on a hard surface. Balance balls or chair discs can alleviate some tension they feel and help ease distractions.
