This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"Act the way you'd like to be and soon you'll be the way you act." ~George Crane.
My project uses a positive behavior management approach allowing our students to make good decisions and take responsibility for their own behaviors with specific individual goals.
My students are in a small structured classroom with close supervision to address their emotional and behavioral disabilities.
Many of the students, ages 8 to 14, are also challenged by mental health and learning disabilities which prevent them from being with the general school population. As a counselor my role is to assist student in accessing their education and provide a safe place for them to express their feeling without judgment. Although bright, capable and charming often their behaviors can affect their academic performance. Our students struggle with inability to focus, impulse control and difficulty with peer interactions.
My Project
When we use a point system to encourage specific behaviors the students can identify the behavior of concern and work to eliminate it themselves. By designating points for each subject area (math, reading, etc.) students become acutely aware of their behavior and can evaluate their own performance for self correction. They always know where they stand and what still needs to be done to improve. Points are given in 10 point increments which corresponds to a regular grading scale. With the never give up attitude our student really want to strive for an A or B. Each moment is a new one therefore if they have a problem they can choose to turn it around quickly. The point store would serve as an incentive to further reinforce the positive behavior.
This gracious donation would allow for a point store filled with items (uniform shirts, toy, pencils, snacks, etc.) that the students need and/or want.
They will be able to earn points over time (for example: by following instructions, task completion or positive peer interactions) to purchase items as a reward. The students light up and their self esteem soars at the possibility of earning a prize. These rewards help create fewer distractions in class and allow for a calm learning environment.
