Help me give my students the motivation they need to succeed. They are working together to try and raise funds for a video game system to play during their reward time.
The Social-Emotional and Academic Learning (S.E.A.L.) program at Temecula Valley High school's mission is to optimize social/emotional health and academic success for lifelong learning, by providing a positive therapeutic environment where students feel safe, motivated and empowered to meet their academic goals. Student's are on an Individualized Education Plan to help them with challenges that are related to social-emotional and academic learning.
Our school district and administration have been very supportive with setting the program up with start-up materials for the different supports required to operate our program that include:
A sensory room used to help students cope with stress.
A positive behavior reward program in which students trade in tickets for reward items.
A teacher and staff hosted "Fun Friday" event for students that are eligible according to the program's points and levels system.
Currently, the teachers and staff spend an average of $50 per month to sustain the majority of the long-term expenses of rewards for the students in the S.E.A.L. program.
My Project
This DonorsChoose.org project started as a class discussion and students worked on this project to make it happen for the whole class. The hope is this activity will teach students the importance of having an idea, working together to make it happen and asking for what they need.
When asked to answer this question as part of the project, this was the student response.
The Xbox One will be used In the S.E.A.L Program at Temecula Valley High School. The S.E.A.L. Program is a Social Emotional Academic Learning classroom for kids that have disabilities. The Xbox will be used for Fun Friday. Fun Friday is a reward time at the end of the week every Friday to those who have earned the reward. The Xbox will be used during the week for the students that have earned the Xbox. The Xbox will mostly be used for Fun Friday. Students earn the reward for having good behavior throughout the week. The Xbox Will help our students with building relationships. It will also help the students come to school and have fun playing together. Some of our students have trouble staying motivated to come to school. The Xbox will not distract students by the Xbox because The Xbox will be locked up; students will not have access to the Xbox without a staff or teacher. They have to earn the video game time. The students will be playing age-appropriate games Like Madden NFL, NBA2k, Racing, Minecraft, and maybe some teen games.
