My Students
My students are very unique. They bring incredible stories, wisdom, and experience to the classroom and create an enriching learning environment for all. I am fortunate enough to not only teach 125 seventh graders, but oversee a department of thirteen teachers who work tirelessly to bring reading to life for their students.
The stories of our students are as riveting as some of the best literature we read in our English classes!
My school prides itself on being "all about the kids", and truly we are. Our focus is on honoring our students' experiences, their family's history and fusing that together with learning experiences that deepen their understanding of the world.
My Project
Our special education reading classes are focusing on reading informational text with a thematic focus on Underwater Life. This cross-discipline unit between science and reading will ask students to read The Magic Tree House Emperor Penguin story, as well as a non-fiction text about the many types of penguins on our planet. The other book pairing focuses on the story of an octopus. These books will prepare students for a field trip to the New England Aquarium in Boston, Massachusetts this spring. This will allow students to apply what they've learned from the text studies, completing a scavenger hunt, gathering data and eventually writing an informational writing piece on the animal of their choice. This is an incredible opportunity for students to be able to see what they are reading!
Learning is literally coming to life right in front of their eyes!
While we would love to provide this opportunity to the 39 students enrolled in these classes, financially it would be a huge burden on the families. Our school does not have a budget for field trips and the cost is too high for students to self-pay. As teachers, we are hoping that we can provide this opportunity for little to no cost for our students! This will certainly be something they remember for years to come!
