From working a boring summer job in Detroit to riding horses on the beaches of Costa Rica, my high-achieving Culture Club students at Southeastern High School eagerly await the opportunity to experience a trip of a lifetime with a fun emphasis on science, a 10-day Educational Tour Abroad to Costa Rica in July of 2024. For them, even the bus ride to the airport will be an adventure and pulling out their passports will foster yet another sense of personal accomplishment and pride.
On their tour abroad, with the help of a 24-hour Tour Director and local tour guides, my students will learn about Costa Rican history and culture every step of the way, develop their Spanish speaking skills, study biology/environmental science firsthand, visit a local school, hike to the Arenal Volcano, plant their own tree at the Reforestation Program, take a guided tour of the rainforest and learn about diverse plant and animal species, participate in a culturally immersive Folklore Evening with local Costa Ricans, involving traditional food, song and dance, soak in the Hot Springs warmed by the volcano, enjoy a giant water slide, time at the beach, a hanging bridges excursion, a crocodile safari, kayaking, ziplining, whitewater rafting, horseback riding and more.
Historically under-resourced in Detroit, my students are willing to step outside of their comfort zone and challenge themselves, knowing that this new experience will provide a life-changing opportunity to learn and grow, to obtain a broader perspective, to gain the vision to realize their greater potential and to open their eyes to a world of new possibilities. Their experience abroad with their peers will forever enhance and shape their lives and leave a lasting impression on their minds and hearts, and it’s all because of your support. Thank you for making it possible! Go Jungaleers!!
